Wilderswil to Grand Hotel Giessbach – Where History Meets Nature

Our half-day adventure begins in the charming village of Wilderswil, just a short ride from Interlaken. Here, history is never far away — the station for the historic Schynige Platte railway still welcomes travelers much like it did in the late 19th century, when visitors first came to admire the surrounding alpine scenery. From the station, we cycle through the old, picture-perfect part of the village and cross a beautifully preserved hydraulic wooden bridge over the Lütschine River — a rare piece of engineering heritage that still blends seamlessly into its mountain setting.

Following the river, we ride past green pastures and a working farm before arriving in Bönigen, a lakeside village known for its traditional wooden chalets and peaceful atmosphere. Here, the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz open before us — their unique color coming from glacial sediments carried down from high in the Bernese Alps.

We follow the quiet southern shore of the lake to Iseltwald, often called the most beautiful village on Lake Brienz. Once a humble fishing settlement, this small community with fewer than 400 residents charms visitors with its peaceful bay, views of the surrounding peaks, and its now-famous pier featured in international films and series.

From Iseltwald, our route climbs gently along a forest trail high above the water, offering glimpses of the lake through the trees. Soon, the roar of falling water announces our next stop — the Giessbach Waterfalls. A short path takes us beneath the cascades, where you can feel the cool mist and capture the scene from multiple angles.

Our final highlight is the Grand Hotel Giessbach, a Belle Époque treasure opened in 1873. Perched above the lake and surrounded by gardens, it is reached by Europe’s first funicular railway (built in 1879). Here, history, nature, and elegance meet — the perfect ending to a ride that blends scenic beauty with timeless Swiss charm.
